Scenting Wool Dryer Balls

For the past couple of years we have used chemical free detergent (RnG and Tiny Bubbles) and love it, however I really miss that clean smell! You know the smell that makes you smile, feel clean, memories, etc. Well, now you can get that smell!

Here is what I do to scent our Buddha Bunz Wool Dryer Balls:

Here are the supplies you will need:

awl (the wooden handle that has a sharp pointed end)
Essential oils or Fragrance oils in the scent you want
syringe (I used one of my husbands Marinade Injector he uses for injecting the turkey for deep frying) I like it, since it has a couple extra holes and measurement. Sorry honey..
ziplock page(s)
and your balls

I scented 6 of our balls with about 1/4 oz of Fragrance oil (it's alot, fyi)

1. Take the Awl and insert it into ball until you reach the middle

2. Fill your syringe with your oils (I filled the syringe up with all that I was going to use for all balls)

3. Insert the syringe into the ball center and squirt it in

4. After removing the syringe, just move the wool around to cover the hole.

5. Put the balls into the ziplock bags overnight for the oils to sink and absorb in.

I scent the balls that we are using and when the scent goes away I just go to another scent. I haven't mixed ball scents in a dryer yet.

So happy scenting! This also works great to add your balls in your laundry room, dresser, coat closets, car, and anywhere else you might want scented.

Knit vs. Woven Bloomers

This is a common question, especially on our RuffleButts. The easy answer is the cotton knit is the exact same fabric that is used to make our t-shirts. It is a soft 100% cotton, stretchy fabric, so more of an "everyday look", and is more wrinkle-resistant. Although the two bloomers are cut using the same pattern, the knit bloomer fits much baggier due to the heavier & stretchy fabric. The woven cotton is the fabric also used to make our solid-color Swing and Peasant Tops. It is 100% cotton, but more of that "traditional" bloomer fabric, and is not stretchy.

Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?

This past couple of weeks have been interesting to say the least! With Jeta and Reva out of school for two weeks and little miss Vana wild as usual, we had some great and not so great moments! But we cherished every moment of it!

My Grandma gave me a card right after she died (she knew the time was coming) and on the front of it said "Live Grow Discover" and inside she wrote a little note about life and to take full advantage of it. (Hence one of the reason why we took a leap of faith and started Lil' Tulip's!) I keep it on our office desk to look at everyday and remember Grandma Shirley.

It's moments like the past couple of weeks that I look at it and smile and laugh about the poop on the walls, the pee on the floors, the straight jacket (read more later), the broken cookie jar, water all over the bathroom floor...

So, who stole the cookie from the cookie jar???? (it was my Grandma's cookie jar, I use every Christmas)

VANA!!!

Yes, our little Vana in her Rump•a•rooz (her favorite) pushed the dining chair to the countertop, crawled over the oven, and grapped the rooster's head and dropped it on the granite.... and ran to the couch! Broke in a couple of places.. So it's back on the bookcase until next year!

Handling Challenging Situations with Our Children

I am in the midst of reading the book Insightful Parenting by Steve Kahn. In fact, I am offering a Parent Book Study on this book starting in November.

I wanted to share two key aspects that Dr. Kahn talks about in the book.

1) In moments where we may feel judged by our children's behaviors, choose to be a role model to the other parents and let them judge you on how you react to your child's behaviors rather than judging your child's behaviors.

2) Regardless of how badly our children may treat us at certain times, we need to treat them better. They will act their age at times (Dr. Kahn refers to this as "age-appropriate inappropriate" behavior), but we are not allowed to act their age.

I can't wait to spend time discussing these key aspects and many others in the Book Study coming up. I know this book is already altering my parenting in positive ways!

Where it all started!

Hello!

My name is Jenny and I'm the owner of Lil' Tulip's! We started this blog with the idea that I would try to write about interesting things and haven't done to much, so we are going to start now! As my friends that know me, I'm not a writer by all means... So I'll do my best. :)

Quick info about me:

Found my husband, Van, in college
Got an Engineer Degree
Have 3 girls
Love to mow the grass
Enjoy the outdoors and travel (my goal is to move to Australia some day)
Been married for 10 yrs this year!

I get the question "How did you get started?" ALOT! So, I thought I would let you all know!

It started when our first child was on the way, Jeta, 6 yrs ago. I was looking for fun, unique items that you wouldn't find at the big chain stores and couldn't find them very easily. We started planning and running numbers to open a retail store locally and had found out that it's not as easy as it looks. So we decided not to go that route and I continued to work as a Financial Planner, as I loved the work I did!

Our second daughter, Reva, came 15 months later (yes, it didn't take long!) and the idea came in our heads again! So this time we decided we'll start online and I could still work in the Financial field. Business started to pick up and I decided I wanted to stay home with the girls! This was the best decision I had ever made to stay home with the girls. As Van, my husband, was a stay at home dad with Reva. It was great, but I felt like I was missing out. We decided to reverse roles and he went back to work and I stayed home with the kids and worked.

Our third Daughter,Vana, came in 2009.

I will say there are days in which I ask myself if I made the right decision. As running a business as a stay at home mom, is not easy! Running kids to activities, school, naps, etc. The list goes on as many of you mom's know!

I couldn't do all this myself!

As my loving Husband, Van, helps out ALOT with shipping, customer orders, questions, etc.

You may also recognize the name Angie, as she is a great help everyday! She handles orders, questions, giveaway, and anything else that come up! She is a mom of 3 boys under the age of 5!!

Chrissie at www.chrissiemariephotography.com does AWESOME photo shoots for us! She is a mom of 2 kids.

Sarah Hokuf does an awesome job on designing our website and couldn't have done this without here! She is a mom to her baby boy!!

Why the name Lil Tulip's?
Because I'm not an artist at all and my girls love to color and always ask to make flowers for them to color and I could only come up with tulips for them. So the hence the name Lil (after the little ones) and Tulips (from the flowers I drew). We did have a previous name, but wasn't as catchy as this, so we switch it. :)

I hope this give you an idea about who we are!

Celebrating Life

Dear friends of mine lost their 7 year old daughter to a sudden illness only weeks ago. I believe this is any parent's worst nightmare. I know this has been and will continue to be an incredibly painful journey for my friends as they begin to live life without their precious daughter, Annie.

Despite all this pain, these friends have taught so many so much in these past two weeks. They have shared so much on their daughter's Caringbridge site (www.caringbridge.org/visit/anniebahneman) about their last days and then last hours with Annie. It's incredibly hard to read as it is so very sad; however, it is beautiful at the same time. They did what felt natural to them at the time and what they knew their daughter would want. Together they held her after she passed sharing stories and thanking God for the wonderful 7 years they had with her. They even took time to wash and comb her hair and paint her fingernails and toenails. Of course none of us know how we would react in a situation like this, but they responded to this situation with love...something that all of us can truly admire.

My friends and their family spent a lot of time during the next days thinking through what they wanted the funeral to be like, taking special consideration into what Annie would have wanted. They wanted it to be a happy time celebrating her life. I know in my lifetime funerals have not always been this way, but I can't help but think that this is such a wonderful lesson for our children. Yes, we are sad that we have lost this beautiful, vibrant child, but we are so lucky to have known her while she was here.

The visitation was filled with numerous memorabilia of Annie's: books she liked, special toys, and other favorite treasures that young children are so drawn to. The room was also filled with photos of Annie with her family, friends, and classmates. As we entered the visitation there was a table set aside for children to draw pictures of themselves with Annie and they were making these into a book. I think this was very therapeutic for many of the children.

The ceremony was lovely and the children present were involved by putting a flower up on the alter near a photo of Annie. However, the part that has stuck with me the most was how the day ended. Annie loved balloons, parades, and pink, so the parents decided to have a walking parade from the church to the burial site. Children were carrying balloons, pinwheels, and were riding on scooters, in strollers, and biking. City workers and police officers were stopping traffic when necessary. The neighborhood families had lined the streets with balloons as well. At times I had to remind myself that I was actually at a funeral and not at a birthday party. Annie would have loved this!

I want to go back to the children's perspective of all of this. Of course there were numerous children present as Annie was only 7 years old. I think to children death is very confusing and often even scary. It's hard for us adults to understand so we can relate when children are confused about this topic. Funerals usually evoke some very hard feelings for all of us and to children these feelings are jumbled and chaotic. To have the focus on celebrating ones life truly kept the focus on the good that has come of this life rather than the tragic loss. I am not saying we cannot be sad in front of our children and cannot bring them to funerals, but I think we can learn so much from the choices my friends made. I think the children that attended this funeral were sad of course, but were given ways to cope with this sadness: looking at numerous photographs (many of the children in them with Annie), drawing pictures of Annie and themselves, watching a slide show of more photos of Annie, her friends, and family, and of course allowing themselves to be happy and giggle and think good thoughts of their dear friend. Many children kept their pinwheels from the parade to put in their yards as a reminder of Annie. At the burial site we all released the balloons. I know this will be a lasting memory for many of those children. It was truly beautiful, not scary. Again, it is a great lesson in death for all of us young and old: To celebrate the life that the person had.

I am not saying the grieving process will not exist, because it certainly does. However, I keep trying to bring my mind back to Annie's wonderful 7 years and how fully she lived in that short time. Would we have loved to have her here longer? Yes, of course. Unfortunately we cannot change that, but we do have her memories to hold onto and I will continue to talk about those memories with my children so they continue to remember Annie and her wonderful spirit!

I admire my friends greatly to be able to teach us all so much these past couple weeks as they have been going through such a difficult time. Our lives are all changed because of this...in so many ways!

Lil' Tulip's is teaming up with Rockin' Green to raise $300 for The Cloth Diaper Foundation! We need your help! For every new fan that "likes" Lil' Tulip's on facebook, we will donate $1 and match Rockin' Green's donation of $300. That's a total donation of $600!

The Cloth Diaper Foundation was created to help all families make cloth diapering affordable and available to those in need! Founded as Miracle Diapers in Oregon in January of 2005 to fill a need. There were many families who wanted to cloth diaper their children for health, economical, and enviornmental reasons but could not due to financial restictions. Some families want to cloth diaper but can't afford the start-up fees. The Cloth Diaper Foundation helps to bulid your stash by giving you diapers on loan until you have what you need.

The Cloth Diaper Foundation relies on your donations to meet the needs of others. So please help us spread the word! Straw-lution Straws in action!

The Straw-lution Straws were delivered today!! Not only were we excited to see them, but to try them out! Vana was our guinea pig at dinner with her yogurt. It worked! I didn't have yogurt all over the place, since Vana thinks she can feed herself..... I was able to cook dinner while she eat away. Vana is 1 yrs old and didn't have one problem with it. She looked at it first and was probably wondering why there wasn't a spoon in there, but once she sucked, she kept on going... I'm still one for learning to use utensils, but help once in awhile is nice to have!

They were alot thicker than I thought they would be, which is good. I'm not worried about reusing them!

You can also use the Sippy Stuff Straw Cleaner with them as well!

Time to Fly Childrens Cancer Run/Walk

In the past my kids and I have participated in this program. My three girls; Jeta, Reva, and Vana have not personally been touched with knowing a child that has/had cancer, however my cousin Becky was unfortunated and was not a survivor of this disease when she was a kid. I really like to expose our children to different things in the world and become commpasionte towards others, since not everyone is created the same.

This year we have created a team under Lil' Tulip's and you are all welcome to join our team in the walk/run!They have a run/walk for kids and a run/walk for adults. Jeta and Reva with Vana in the stroller will be doing the walk for kids. It's such a great run/walk for kids and they enjoy it too! In the past they have had activities for the kids as well.

I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds in support of Children's Cancer Research Fund and their fight against childhood cancer. Did you know that 1 in every 350 kids will be diagnosed with cancer before age 20 this year — that’s approximately 13,000 kids annually.
To raise money for this cause, I have registered for the 8th annual Time to Fly, to be held on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Harriet Island Regional Park in St. Paul. I will join more than 2,500 people who will walk or run in support of childhood cancer survivors and current patients, as well as honor those kids who have lost their courageous battles with the disease. Approximately 2,000 pediatric cancer patients will die this year in the U.S. and approximately 160,000 worldwide, which is why we still need help!
Please help support me in this important cause by contributing generously to Children's Cancer Research Fund. Your tax-deductible contribution will support research that is revolutionizing the way pediatric cancer is treated worldwide by funding programs at the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota.

Layla Grace

Where to begin?? Layla Grace was an Angel that was sent to us to touch our lives and make us better moms, daughters, wifes, and all in all a better person. Layla Grace joined the Angels in Heaven on March 9, 2010 after a long battle of Cancer called Neuroblastoma.

I had met Shanna (Layla Grace's Mom) thru her website that was inspired by Layla called Baby Wears Prada. I received an email from her back in May of 2009 that Layla was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma and going to fight this disease off.

Many of us have followed her story at http://www.laylagrace.org/ or thru twitter and feel like we have known Layla Grace as one of our own. She has touched so many people with her story and Shanna is on a mission to spread the word about this awfull disease that NO child should go thru.

We want to help! We have teamed up with Shanna and the Marsh Family and are going to donate $1.00 for each new fan on our facebook page from today until April 3,2010 (up to $2,000). The money will go directly into the bank in Layla's name for medical expenses and for the family to start her foundation. So help spread the word out and help this family out.
